SUMMARY:Exhibit Opening: "How Did We Get Here?"
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an opening reception for How Did We Get Here? An exhibition by Werner Sun displayed jointly at the Cayuga Museum and Schweinfurth Art Center.  \nThe work in this exhibition is drawn from three series that grew out of Sun’s fascination with how we perceive the world around us. Double Vision (in the Schweinfurth Art Center) features multi-panel pieces that evoke a fragmented experience of looking. Big Bang (at the Cayuga Museum of History & Art) channels pandemic-era anxiety through photographs of a glitching computer monitor. Rose Window (at the Cayuga Museum) is an extended improvisation on mathematical diagrams\, landscape photographs\, and calligraphic drawings/paintings\, where new pieces are generated from earlier works in the sequence. All three series are unified by a common visual vocabulary\, but they each project a different character — austere or agitated or organic — which speaks to the contrasting architectural styles of the Schweinfurth Art Center and the Cayuga Museum. \nThe reception will be held form 4:30 – 7:30 PM\, free admission and light refreshments will be served.  \nHow Did We Get Here? will be on display April 4 – May 17\, and Sun will present an artist talk on May 3 at 2 PM. \nLearn More

SUMMARY:Lunchtime Lecture: "Flames & Factories: Auburn’s Industrial Boom and the Firefighters Who Battled It"
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Cayuga Museum Carriage House in Auburn\, NY\, on April 25th from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM for a fascinating look at how Auburn’s fire service evolved alongside its industrial growth. This engaging lecture is part of the Cayuga Museum’s Luncheon Lecture Series and ties into the current exhibit\, “Making History: Stories of Industry in Auburn.” \nFrom the early mills of the 19th century to the rise of manufacturing giants\, industry has long shaped Auburn’s landscape. But with progress came peril—major industrial fires tested the city’s resilience and drove innovations in firefighting. Discover the stories of Auburn’s most significant industrial blazes and the fire department’s role in protecting the city’s prosperity. \nThis lecture will be presented by Lt. Brian Jessie of the Auburn Fire Department\, who has served the city for over 18 years.

SUMMARY:Vanished but Not Forgotten: The Legacy of Cayuga County’s Jewish Community
DESCRIPTION:This talk explores the history of Jewish life in Auburn and Cayuga County\, tracing the story of Congregation B’nai Israel from its beginnings in the late 19th century to its closure in 2013. Drawing on archival research\, personal narratives\, and community records\, This conversation will highlight the contributions of Jewish residents to Auburn’s civic\, cultural\, and economic life\, including key figures such as George Michaels\, a former member of New York State Assembly\, and Maurice Schwartz\, a former mayor of Auburn. We’ll also examine the challenges faced by small Jewish communities in upstate New York\, the role of interfaith collaboration\, and how B’nai Israel’s legacy continues through charitable initiatives\, Holocaust remembrance efforts\, and local historical preservation. This presentation invites reflection on the broader story of small-town Jewish life in America and the enduring impact of communities that may no longer exist physically but remain vital parts of our shared history. \n  \n\n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\nAustin Reid is a writer and historian whose work focuses on documenting hidden Jewish histories and legacies\, with a particular interest in small-town Jewish communities in the United States and beyond. His research has been featured in The Cleveland Plain Dealer\, Jewish Telegraphic Agency and The Times of Israel\, and he has presented his work at various historical societies and libraries. Austin’s exploration of Auburn’s Jewish history stems from his broader efforts to understand how Jewish communities have shaped\, and been shaped by\, the places they called home. He holds degrees from Capital University and Cornell University and is passionate about uncovering stories that connect local history to broader cultural and historical currents. \n\nAdmission to this program is $10 for the general public\, $5 for Museum Members. If you have access to a Museum Guest Pass\, you may redeem a pass for free entry to this program. \nIf you are unable to attend this program in-person\, you may request access to the live stream with a $5 donation.
