Reunion ribbons of the 9th New York Heavy Artillery. The 9th New York Heavy Artillery regiment began as the 138th New York Volunteers in 1862 with men from Cayuga and Wayne Counties. Not long after mustering into service, the 138th was converted into the 9th. The regiment spent much of their early service digging fortifications around Washington but were transferred to the field in 1864 to help Grant’s offensive.
