About the Author
Michael Orofino is a restauranteur, chef, and author whose passion for hospitality has spanned more than five decades.
In 1975, he opened Orofino’s, an Italian restaurant in a roadside truck stop that quickly earned a loyal following among the residents of Calabasas, Agoura Hills, Malibu, and the greater San Fernando Valley. Built on authentic Italian recipes, warm hospitality, and the belief that every guest should feel like family, Orofino’s quickly became a place where anniversaries were celebrated, friendships were formed, and lasting memories were made.
Over the years, Orofino’s welcomed generations of loyal patrons, along with numerous entertainers, athletes, and well-known personalities who appreciated its relaxed atmosphere and exceptional Italian cuisine. The restaurant was also featured in several Southern California newspapers, top ten restaurant and dining guides in both southern and northern California and the subject of a memorable TV and newspaper feature about reports that it was haunted—one of many colorful stories from its history.
After Orofino’s Michael continued a successful career in the restaurant and hospitality industry, owning and operating additional restaurants, a mini chain of New York Sandwich delis and a catering business before eventually retiring to Florida.
Today, he has returned to the story that started it all. His memoir, Orofinos: The Uncommon Italian Restaurant, shares the personal journey behind the restaurant—its triumphs, challenges, unforgettable guests, and the lessons learned along the way. His companion volume, Orofino’s Cookbook, preserves many of the restaurant’s favorite recipes so longtime guests and a new generation of home cooks can enjoy the flavors that made Orofino’s special.
More than a collection of recipes or restaurant memories, Michael’s books are a tribute to family, friendship, perseverance, and the enduring belief that great food has the power to bring people together.
Michael and his wife, Luanne, live in Central Florida, He continues to write, cook and share the stories and traditions that shaped both his life and Orofino’s enduring legacy.
