Our Lunchtime Lecture series will feature local experts exploring a diverse range of topics related to the unique history of Cayuga County. Bring a bag lunch, and join us throughout the summer. Unless otherwise specified, Lunchtime Lectures will take place at Cayuga Museum Downtown, 144 Genesee St., Suite 100. Free parking is available in the nearby parking garage.

Making History: Industry in Auburn
Speaker: Haley Boothe

The Auburn area and the wider Cayuga County have had a rich industrial history that dates back to the late eighteenth century. This presentation will outline this history chronologically, while touching on specific companies whose impacts are still felt in our area today. We will also explore how industry impacted the local community – throughout the early days of industrial development, the decline in the late-twentieth century, and the more recent resurgence.
About the Speaker
Haley Boothe is the Cayuga Museum of History and Art Curator, responsible for creating most exhibitions at the Cayuga Museum and a long term project exploring all of Cayuga County history. You can read Haley’s full bio HERE

A History of Auburn in 10 Properties

Andrew Roblee will present an overview of the history of Auburn, New York through ten historic properties that had an impact on the city’s growth and development. From the mundane to the monumental, this presentation will showcase how the built environment impacts us still today.
About the Speaker
Andrew Roblee is the President of Roblee Historic Preservation, LLC, a historic preservation planning firm. He has supported numerous historic preservation projects, written successful grants resulting in over $600,000 to date of funding for historic sites, authored historic resources surveys, assisted developers in applying for millions of dollars in historic tax credits, and conducted National Register of Historic Places eligibility determinations and nominations. He holds a BA in History from Wells College and an MA in Historic Preservation Planning from Cornell University. He is the President of the Preservation Association of Central New York (PACNY) and a founding partner of the Circularity, Reuse, Zero-Waste Deconstruction (CR0WD) working group. Additionally, he is an Allied member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). Previously, Andy served on the City of Auburn Historic Resources Review Board, and many other local non-profit boards.

Three Fire Alarm: The History of the Auburn Fire Department

Join members of the Auburn Fire Department’s History Committee for a captivating exploration of their department’s rich history, focusing on the events of September 13th, 1973. Discover the remarkable story of the Cayuga Museum’s survival from a devastating fire on that fateful day. Experience an array of historical photos and artifacts from both the fire department and museum collections. Gain a firsthand perspective on how the alarm was received during this pivotal moment in local history.
About the Speaker
Brian Jessie, born and raised in Auburn, NY, discovered his passion for firefighting at the age of 18 when he joined the Owasco Volunteer Fire Department, becoming a third-generation firefighter. Following Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Brian served as a Disaster Assistance Employee with FEMA, providing crucial support in New Orleans and surrounding areas for two months.
In 2006, Brian was hired by the Auburn Fire Department, where he has dedicated his 18-year career to serving the community. Recognized for his leadership, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in 2015. In his role, Brian has overseen operations on Engine and Truck Companies, ensuring the safety and security of Auburn residents.
Brian continues to embody a commitment to public service and remains deeply rooted in the Auburn community, both professionally and personally.

It relates to their courtship, the Martin & Upton families, Willowbrook, and the various locations in the country where Emily and Emory resided throughout their time together. A PowerPoint program provides visuals and other details to go along with the readings.
