Western Film Series

Join us this spring for an in-depth look into the stories and greater cultural impact of Western films through cinema. This series is in conjunction with our ongoing film exhibit, The Reel American West.

The film series will feature a virtual introduction and exploration of the history of Western Movies by Andrew Patrick Nelson, Chief Curator of Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West. Film screenings will take place in-person, with Andrew Nelson introducing the films and leading a moderated discussion following each film virtually. Entry for the “Into the Sunset” Film Series is FREE, though donations are greatly appreciated.

A charming, happy-go-lucky bandit in old Arizona plays cat-and-mouse with the sheriff trying to catch him while he romances a local beauty. The first Western with sound-film featured an all-Movietone soundtrack thanks to the work of the Case Research Lab! Andrew Patrick Nelson will join us virtually to introduce the film and lead a Q&A afterwards.

About the Facilitator

Andrew Patrick Nelson

Andrew P. Nelson is an historian of American cinema and culture. He is also a museum curator, teacher, and media commentator. He cohosts How the West Was ‘Cast with screenwriter and entertainment journalist Matthew Chernov. Andrew is the founding editor of two books series: The Popular West at the University of Oklahoma Press and Reel West at the University of New Mexico Press. He has appeared in programs on History Channel, INSP, PBS, Fox Nation, NPR, CBC, and elsewhere, and been interviewed in publications like ​The Hollywood Reporter, the New York Times​, and the Times of London. Andrew currently serves as Chief Curator of Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West and previously chaired the Department of Film & Media Arts at the University of Utah.
